On April 2, 2016 GLAAD will hold their 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, California. During the ceremony GLAAD will present Demi Lovato with the GLAAD Vanguard Award, presented to media professionals who have made a difference in promoting equality and acceptance.

Lovato, a former ambassador for the GLAAD anti-bullying campaign, Spirit Day, has been widely praised as a champion for LGBT rights. During her career, Lovato has publicly celebrated her late grandfather, who came out of the closet in the 1960s. She cites his courage as a driving force propelling her to speak out and stand up for what she believes in. In 2014 Lovato filmed the music video for her single “Really Don’t Care” at a Los Angeles LGBT pride event and included strong messages of support for LGBT people. In 2013, Lovato played a lesbian character on Fox’s hit TV show Glee, and noted she hoped to “inspire people with my character to love who they are and accept who they are.”

“Demi Lovato has consistently used her platform as a successful artist to send messages of acceptance and support to LGBT people everywhere,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said. “She is an extraordinary ally who is committed to helping young people embrace who they are and live the lives they love.”

The awards will be televised on Logo in a one-hour special on Monday, April 4 at 10 p.m.

Ms. Lovato can be seen in Seattle at Key Arena on August 21st with Nick Jonas on their “Future Now” tour. During her appearance on the final season of American Idol this Thursday, Demi talked with Ryan Seacrest about the tour.

“We want it to be extremely interactive with all of the fans, and we want to play new music. I want to perform new music.”

“We want it to be extremely interactive,” she added. “That comes down to the performances, but also the smell when you enter the arena.”
